College Transition Advising Intern

About the Role

As a College Transition Advisor, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the success and well-being of our college students. Under the supervision of our founder, you will be responsible for providing personalized support and guidance to a caseload of 25 students, consisting of both second-year and first-year students. Your dedication and commitment will be instrumental in fostering their academic achievements, personal growth, and overall satisfaction with their college experience.


Contract Details:

  • $2000 stipend, split into two $1000 payments (paid in December and May)

  • 100 hours of work total (50 per semester)


Key Responsibilities:


Caseload Management

  • Act as a primary point of contact for 25 college students, offering individualized support tailored to their unique needs and challenges.

  • Proactively identify and address any barriers to academic success or personal development, providing appropriate interventions and referrals as needed. 

  • As a College Transition Advisor,  there will be involvement in  facilitating connections between students and a wide range of resources available on campus and within the community. There will be expectation to collaborate with students to identify their needs and then guide them towards relevant resources that can further support their academic journey and overall success leading to college graduation. This includes but is not limited to academic support services, career counseling, financial aid opportunities, mental health resources, internships, and networking opportunities with alumni and industry professionals. 

Implement Process and Training

  • Execute a comprehensive support process provided by the supervisor, utilizing best practices and evidence-based strategies to enhance student outcomes.

  • Engage in ongoing training sessions to deepen your understanding of student support principles and refine your skills in delivering effective guidance and assistance.

Student Check-Ins

  • Conduct at least two comprehensive check-in sessions with each student per semester utilizing a combination of virtual meetings and/or on-campus visits to establish rapport and assess their progress.

  • Maintain regular communication with students through monthly phone & text check-ins, offering continuous guidance, encouragement, and resources to support their academic and personal goals.

Feedback Collection

  • Work with supervisor to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the advising process with the assigned students, seeking their input and feedback to inform ongoing improvements and adjustments.

  • Compile and analyze feedback data to identify trends, strengths, and areas for enhancement, presenting insights and recommendations to the supervisor for further review and consideration.

Administrative Duties:

  • Keep detailed and accurate records of student interactions, progress updates, and any interventions or accommodations implemented, ensuring compliance with FERPA institutional policies and confidentiality guidelines.

  • Collaborate closely with other institutional staff members, faculty, and departments to facilitate a holistic and coordinated approach to student support, promoting synergy and alignment across various support services and resources.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or working towards a Bachelor's degree and in your final year (in any field) required.

  • Working towards a Master’s degree in Education, Higher Education, Counseling, Psychology or related field preferred.

  • Previous experience working with college students or in a similar support role preferred, demonstrating an understanding of student development and best practices in higher education.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships, navigate sensitive conversations, and empower students to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to multitask, prioritize competing demands, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Compassionate and empathetic demeanor, with a genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, fostering a supportive and inclusive campus environment for students from all backgrounds.

  • Proficiency in virtual communication tools (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams) and Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with the flexibility to adapt to evolving technologies and platforms as needed.
